José Ribeiro e Castro

A lawyer by profession, he holds a law degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. A member of the Social Democratic Centre, he led its National Political Commission between 2005 and 2007. He was also a member of Parliament (1976-1983, 1999-2002 and again since 2009); advisor to the Minister of Education of the X Constitutional Government, Roberto Carneiro (1985-1995); Member of the European Parliament (2004-2009), where he was vice-president of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs. He is president of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and Portuguese Communities (since 2009).
