José Neves nasceu em Lisboa em 1978. É professor auxiliar no Departamento de História da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas e investigador do Instituto de História Contemporânea da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Dirige atualmente a revista Práticas da História: Journal on Theory, Historiography and Uses of the Past. É autor de Comunismo e Nacionalismo em Portugal: Política, Cultura e História no Século XX (Tinta-da-china, 2008), obra que recebeu o Prémio Victor de Sá 2008, o Prémio CES 2009 e o Prémio Adérito Sedas Nunes 2010. Ainda na Tinta-da-china, coordenou Como se Faz Um Povo: Ensaios em História Contemporânea de Portugal; A Política dos Muitos: Povo, Classes e Multidão (com Bruno Peixe Dias); Quem Faz a História: Ensaios sobre o Portugal Contemporâneo e Álvaro Cunhal: Política, História e Estética. Publicou também, com Nuno Domingos, A Época do Futebol — O Jogo Visto pelas Ciências Sociais (Assírio & Alvim, 2004).
