José Milhazes é natural da Póvoa de Varzim. Em 1977 rumou à União Soviética para se licenciar em História da Rússia pela Universidade Estatal de Moscovo (Lemonossov). Dedicou-se depois à tradução de obras literárias e políticas e em 1989 começou a fazer trabalho jornalístico para a TSF e outros media nacionais. Em 2009 doutorou-se pela Universidade do Porto e, em 2015, regressou a Portugal, com um conhecimento ímpar da sociedade russa e da Europa de Leste. É atualmente comentador da SIC. Avô de cinco netos, vive com a sua mulher, Siri, em Oeiras. É autor de vasta obra publicada, da qual destacamos As Minhas Aventuras no País dos Sovietes (2017) e Os Blumthal (2019). Em 2013 foi distinguido com a Ordem do Mérito da República Portuguesa.
