José Bértolo

José Bértolo holds a PhD from the University of Lisbon (2019) and is a researcher at the Centre for Comparative Studies. He has developed work in the areas of film studies, intermediality and comparative literature, with a special focus on issues of fiction and narrative, representation and figuration, ontology and materiality of images.
He published, in Documenta, Images in Flight: The Ghosts of François Truffaut (2016), Overprints: Readings of Films (2019) and Specters of Cinema: Manoel de Oliveira and João Pedro Rodrigues (2020). He co-organized the volumes The Writing of Cinema: Essays (with Clara Rowland, Documenta, 2015), Death and Spectrality in the Arts and Literature (with Fernando Guerreiro, Húmus, 2019) and Imitations of Life: Classic American Cinema (with Fernando Guerreiro and Clara Rowland, Bookbuilders, 2020), and co-edited, with Margarida Medeiros, an issue of the Journal of Communication and Languages ​​dedicated to "The Ghosts of Photography and Cinema".
She has organized and participated in national and international conferences, been responsible for programming film series in cultural and academic spaces, and has collaborated with various institutions and websites.
