John Gwynne estudou e deu aulas na Universidade de Brighton. Tocou contrabaixo numa banda de rock n' roll viajando pelos EUA e o Canadá. É casado, tem quatro filhos e vive em Eastbourne, onde faz parte de um grupo de reconstituição histórica viking. Quando não está a escrever, pode ser visto apoiado numa parede feita de escudos com três dos seus filhos ao seu redor. Os seus cães acreditam que ele é seu escravo.
