John Grogan nasceu em Detroit, em 1957. Tem trabalhado como repórter, chefe de redacção e colunista, em vários jornais americanos. Recebeu o prémio de Jornalismo do National Press Club.
Vive actualmente num monte da Pensilvânia, com a mulher, Jenny, os três filhos e uma cadela labrador - a Gracie - que os vizinhos e amigos consideram «surpreendentemente calma».
