Joaquim Ferreira do Amaral nasceu em Lisboa em 1945. É engenheiro mecânico pelo Instituto Superior Técnico. Percorreu uma carreira profissional e política que o levou a ocupar vários cargos públicos, nomeadamente membro de diversos governos. Desde muito novo que se interessou por História e em particular pela História dos descobrimentos, da cartografia e da expansão portuguesa. Publicou em 1995 a obra Pedro Reinel me fez – à volta de um mapa dos descobrimentos e contribuiu com vários artigos sobre o tema para diversos jornais e revistas.
