João Zilhão é investigador da Universidade de Lisboa, à qual regressou após uma longa carreira por universidades de Espanha, França, Alemanha e Reino Unido. Foi o responsável científico pela criação do Parque Arqueológico do Côa e sua classificação como Património Mundial, e pela descoberta do "Menino do Lapedo". A imagem humanizada que hoje temos dos neandertais deve-se em grande medida aos resultados da investigação que dirigiu ou impulsionou em jazidas de Portugal, Espanha e Roménia.
