João Leal is a Full Professor of Anthropology at FCSH (UNL) and a researcher at CRIA, the Network Center for Anthropology (FCSH-UNL, ISCTE-UL, UCoimbra, UMinho). He was a Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil) (2001) and at the Federal University of Maranhão (Brazil) (2014). Member of the National Council of Culture - Museums Section, Conservation and Intangible Heritage (Ministry of Culture). Main research topics: history of anthropology in Portugal, national identity, popular culture, and festivals in Espírito Santo.
