Jean Racine
Jean Racine (1639-1699) was a poet, playwright, and historian. He had a meteoric rise and a brilliant career. In 1677 he left the theatre and was appointed historiographer to King Louis XIV. Along with Pierre Corneille, Jean Racine is one of the most important men of French and European theatre of the seventeenth century and the greatest exponent of French classical tragedy.
