Nasceu em 1925 e faleceu em dezembro 2017. Membro da Academia Francesa, foi secretário-geral e depois presidente do Conselho International de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas da UNESCO. É um dos mais brilhantes e confessionais romancistas e pensadores franceses da actualidade.
Nos últimos quarenta anos, publicou mais de trinta livros, entre os quais se destacam Au plaisir de Dieu, La Gloire de l’Empire, Mon dernier rêve sera pour vous, La Douane de mer, Histoire du Juif errant, Voyez comme on danse, Et toi mon coeur, pourquoi bats-tu, La Création du monde. O romance O Mundo É Uma Coisa Estranha, afinal é o seu primeiro livro a ser traduzido em Portugal.
