Nasceu a 19 de Março de 1950 no Alabama. Licenciou-se em Sociologia na Universidade Auburn e concluiu o Mestrado em Assistência Social em 1975. Trabalhou durante 15 anos com adolescentes psicologicamente fragilizados e com as suas famílias.
Redfield é mundialmente conhecido pelos seus escritos sobre a vida espiritual e as relações entre a experiência e a dimensão sagrada do universo. A Profecia Celstina, lançada em 1993, é o seu livro mais conhecido e também mais traduzido: foi aliás, durante dois anos, o título americano mais vendido em todo o mundo.
