James McBride is the author of Deacon King Kong, a New York Times bestseller and Oprah Book Club book; The Good Lord Bird, winner of the National Book Award; the American classic The Color of Water; the novels Song Yet Sung and Miracle at St. Anna; the book of short stories Five-Carat Soul; and Kill 'Em and Leave, a biography of James Brown. James McBride was named one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2024 by TIME, and was awarded the National Medal for the Humanities in 2016. He is also an excellent musician and writer-in-residence at New York University.
