James Frey nasceu em Cleveland, mas já viveu em dez estados americanos e em seis países. Foi uma espécie de «homem dos sete ofícios», tendo trabalhado como argumentista, director e produtor de filmes, empregado de mesa, segurança de hotel e motorista de autocarro. Actualmente vive em Nova Iorque, já escreveu um segundo romance My Friend Leonard e, apesar da polémica suscitada em torno de Uma Vida em Mil Pedaços, seu romance de estreia, é considerado um dos mais promissores nomes de uma nova geração de escritores.
