De ascendência transmontana, J. Rentes de Carvalho nasceu em 1930, em Vila Nova de Gaia, onde viveu até 1945. Obrigado a abandonar o país por motivos políticos, viveu no Rio de Janeiro, em São Paulo, Nova Iorque e Paris, trabalhando para jornais como O Estado de São Paulo, O Globo e o Expresso. Em 1956 passou a viver em Amesterdão, onde se licenciou (com uma tese sobre Raul Brandão) e foi docente de Literatura Portuguesa entre 1964 e 1988. Dedica-se desde então exclusivamente à escrita e a uma vasta colaboração em jornais portugueses, brasileiros, belgas e holandeses, além de várias revistas literárias. Escreveu romances, contos, diário, crónica, e guias de viagem ou ensaios. Vive entre Amesterdão e Estevais (Mogadouro), metade do ano em cada sítio.
