J. M. Ledgard nasceu nas ilhas Shetland, Reino Unido, em 1968. Além de Sumersos - um dos melhores livros de 2013 segundo o New York Times -, escreveu o romance Giraffe e o livro de ensaios Terra Firma. Foi durante muitos anos correspondente do The Economist e é um reconhecido especialista em soluções tecnológicas para as economias emergentes, tendo sido conselheiro de vários países, instituições e empresas. Submersos está publicado em diversas línguas e foi adaptado ao cinema por Wim Wenders, num filme protagonizado por Alicia Vikander e James McAvoy.
