J. F. Matias é um moçambicano das serranias, beirão dos trópicos, tinha 20 anos no 25 de Abril. Gostava de poesia, mas estudou economia. Paciência! Cidadão do mundo, que percorreu vendendo coisas várias, encontrou um dia, num hotel de Frankfurt, um afegão enfezado que vendia tapetes e reviu-se nele. Foi aí que, já tendo feito filhos e plantado árvores, decidiu que um dia escreveria um livro, ainda que ninguém o lesse, e aconselhou o afegão a fazer o mesmo.
Orgulhoso o suficiente para escrever, humilde quanto baste para perceber que ao leitor o que mais interessa é o livro, pouco lhe importando quem o escreveu.
