Isaiah Berlin nasceu em Riga, capital da Letónia, em 1909. Aos seis anos, a sua família mudou-se para a Rússia; aí, em 1917, em Petrogrado, testemunhou ambas as Revoluções - Social-Democrata e Bolchevique. Em 1921 a sua família foi para Inglaterra e ele foi educado na St. Paul’s School e no Corpus Christi College de Oxford. Em Oxford foi membro do All Souls, membro do New College, Professor de Teoria Social e Política e Presidente fundador do Wolfson College. Ocupou igualmente a Presidência da Academia Britânica. Para além de A Traição da Liberdade, a sua obra publicada inclui Karl Marx, Russian Thinkers, Concepts and Categories, Against the Current, Personal Impressions, The Crooked Timber of Humanity, The Sense of Reality, The Proper Study of Mankind, The Roots of Romanticism, The Power of Ideas, Three Critics of the Enlightenment e Liberty. Como um dos expoentes da história das ideias, Berlin foi galardoado com os Prémios Erasmus, Lippincott e Agnelli; recebeu igualmente o Prémio Jerusalém pela defesa das liberdades civis ao longo da sua vida. Morreu em 1997.
