Em meados da década de 80, Howard Marks mantinha 43 identidades diferentes, 89 linhas telefónicas e possuia 25 empresas que negociavam em todo o mundo. No auge da sua carreira, ele traficou carregamentos de mais de trinta toneladas de marijuana, e a sua actividade era seguida por organizações tão diversas como o M16, a CIA, o IRA ou a Mafia. Na sequência de uma operação mundial do DEA (Drugs Enforcement Agency), Marks é preso e sentenciado a uma pena de 25 anos de prisão. É libertado em Abril de 1995, após cumprir sete anos da sentença, na prisão de Terre Haute, no Indiana.
