Herberto Helder
Herberto Helder was born in 1930 in Funchal, where he completed the 5th grade. In 1948 he enrolled in Law but soon abandoned that course to enroll in Romance Philology, which he attended for three years. He had numerous works and collaborated in several periodicals such as The Proud One, Re-nhau-nhau, Búzio, Poetry Leaves, Graal, Midday Notebooks, Pyramid, Round Table, Journal of Letters and ArtsIn 1969 he worked as literary director of the publishing house. PrintHe traveled through Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, and in 1971 he left for Africa where he did a series of reports for the magazine. NewsIn 1994 he was awarded the Pessoa Prize, which he refused. He died in Cascais on March 23, 2015, at the age of 84.
