Nascido em 1953, foi, até 2015, coordenador do suplemento cultural do Berliner Zeitung e professor honorário de Jornalismo Cultural na Universitäat der Künste de Berlim. O seu livro A Hora dos Lobos foi distinguido com o prémio da Feira do Livro de Leipzig, tendo figurado durante vários meses na lista dos livros mais vendidos da Spiegel. Foi publicado em vários países, entre os quais os Estados Unidos e Inglaterra. De acordo com o New York Times, «Jähner relata a história turbulenta da década do pós-guerra em todas as suas contradições… um livro fascinante.»
