He was born in Sedielos, Peso da Régua, in 1901 and began his career in commerce. He abandoned it early to dedicate himself to journalism, making his first contribution at the age of 18. In his self-taught education, he assimilated a certain empirical agnosticism, with a special sympathy for Karl Marx. He later converted to Catholicism.
