Gregory David Roberts was born in Melbourne, Australia, and Shantaram His most acclaimed work. Sentenced to nineteen years for a series of armed robberies, he escaped from Pentridge Prison. During his escape, he lived for ten years in Mumbai, where he founded a free clinic for needy people and worked as a forger, smuggler, arms dealer, and street soldier for one of the Mumbai mafia's branches. Recaptured, he served his sentence, at the end of which he established a successful multimedia company. Roberts is currently a full-time writer and lives in Mumbai.
