Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781) foi um dos maiores vultos do Iluminismo alemão. A sua sensibilidade crítica e talento filosófico valeram-lhe rasgados elogios de Goethe, Herder e, mais tarde, de Kierkegaard e Nietzsche. Numa Alemanha fragmentada e dominada pelo chamado despotismo esclarecido, cursou Medicina e Teologia, repartiu a vida entre Leipzig, Hamburgo e Berlim, e consagrou-se à defesa da tolerância religiosa, designadamente nos diálogos Ernst und Falk (1778).

Envolveu-se em intensas polémicas literárias e sociais, nas quais se destacou pelo espírito incisivo e argúcia; o seu combate contra o anti-semitismo valeu-lhe dissabores e perseguições da Igreja. Renovador do teatro alemão, com a Dramaturgia de Hamburgo (1767-1769) e o drama Minna von Barnhelm (1767), G. E. Lessing foi a crítica viva da sua época, em prol de uma fraternidade universal que suplantasse dogmatismos e ortodoxias.
