Gonzalo Torrente Ballester (El Ferrol, 1910-1999 Salamanca) é um autor fundamental da literatura espanhola contemporânea. Estudou História na Universidade de Santiago, onde foi professor de Literatura a partir de 1940; dedicou quase toda a sua vida ao ensino e à literatura, quer em Espanha quer nos EUA. Dramaturgo, ensaísta, crítico e romancista, Ballester recebeu, entre muitos outros, os prémios Nacional de Literatura em 1981, o Príncipe das Astúrias em 1982 e o Miguel de Cervantes em 1985.
