Gonzalo Torrente Ballester

Gonzalo Torrente Ballester (El Ferrol, 1910–1999 Salamanca) is a fundamental author of contemporary Spanish literature. He studied History at the University of Santiago, where he was a professor of Literature from 1940; he dedicated almost his entire life to teaching and literature, both in Spain and the USA. A playwright, essayist, critic, and novelist, Ballester received, among many others, the National Literature Prize in 1981, the Prince of Asturias Award in 1982, and the Miguel de Cervantes Prize in 1985.
