Trabalhou muitos anos como jornalista cultural da Rádio Metropolitana e na rádio Ciudad de La Habana. Tem escrito artigos para todos os principais jornais e revistas em Cuba, incluindo Granma, Tribuna de La Habana, e Juventud Rebelde. Conquistou diversos prémios, entre os quais o mais importante prémio literário em Cuba, o Prémio Alejo Carpentier, atribuído a Oil on Canvas, título original da presente obra. Os críticos consideram os seus livros difíceis de classificar porque parecem estar na fronteira entre géneros diferentes: fantástico, gótico, e romance histórico. É publicada pela primeira vez na Europa, continente pelo qual sente especial interesse, pela sua cultura, pela arte que tanto aprecia e que pinta com palavras, a sua melhor arte.
