George Steiner é considerado um herdeiro de Sócrates no século XX. Nasceu em Paris, em 1929, partindo com a família para Nova Iorque no início dos anos 40 para escapar ao nazismo. Obteve a sua licenciatura em Letras na Universidade de Chicago em 1948. Em 1950, concluiu o mestrado na Universidade de Harvard, onde recebeu o Bell Prize in American Literature. De 1950 a 1952, foi bolseiro da Fundação Cecil Rhodes na Universidade de Oxford, onde se doutorou. Juntou-se à redação do The Economist, em Londres, sendo depois membro do Institute for Advanced Study, em Princeton. Em 1959, recebeu o prémio O. Henry Short Story. Foi professor de Inglês e Literatura Comparada na Universidade de Genebra de 1974 a 1994 e membro da Churchill College em Cambridge a partir de 1969. Foi também professor de Literatura Comparada na Universidade de Oxford e professor de Poesia em Harvard. Colaborou na The New Yorker, no The Times Literary Supplement e no The Guardian. Faleceu em Cambridge, em 2020.
