Herculano Alves é Franciscano Capuchinho português. Estudou Teologia no Instituto Católico de Toulouse (França), Filologia Românica na Universidade de Coimbra e Ciências Bíblicas no Instituto Bíblico de Roma, tendo feito o seu doutoramento em Teologia Bíblica na Universidade Pontifícia de Salamanca. De 1986 a 2011 foi professor de Sagrada Escri­tura na Universidade Católica Portuguesa. Foi também Coordenador Geral e tradutor de vários livros da Bíblia dos Capuchinhos (Difusora Bíblica). Foi Diretor do Movimento de Dinami­zação Bíblico dos Capuchinhos em Portugal durante vinte anos e diretor da Revista Bíblica.
