Francisco José Pereira Alves, nasceu e cresceu no planalto mirandês, fez o curso do liceu em Bragança, licenciou-se e doutorou-se no Porto. É médico e professor universitário.
Edgar Alan Poe acompanhou-o em várias noites de insónia, mas foi Saramago que o convenceu a publicar. Antes, escrevera várias histórias deixadas nas gavetas esquecidas do tempo.
Escreve entre consultas, nas pausas do café, à noite, nos aviões, quando as ideias surgem, ou as dúvidas.
Escreve por necessidade, para se entender, para entender. Lê por puro prazer.
