Frances Hardinge nasceu em Kent, Inglaterra, e sempre gostou de histórias sombrias. Estudou em Oxford, onde venceu um concurso literário promovido por uma revista. Mas foi depois, com o livro A Rapariga que sabia ler, já publicado pela Presença, que ganhou notoriedade. A Árvore das Mentiras consolidou o seu sucesso como autora e trouxe-lhe uma distinção literária de grande prestígio, o Prémio Costa para Melhor Livro do Ano em 2015. Os direitos desta obra estão vendidos para mais de 10 países.
