Fernando Cristóvão
Retired Full Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, he was an assistant to Vitorino Nemésio at the Faculty of Letters of Lisbon, succeeding him in the Chair of Brazilian Literature.
President of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon (1982-84), where he held various positions (Director, 1977-78, President of the "Support Center" of the Faculty of Letters in Funchal, 1984, Director of the Library, 1993-96, Director of the Executive Committee of the Department of Romance Languages, 1995-96), of the Institute of Portuguese Culture and Language – ICALP (1984-89), now the Camões Institute, of the Association of Lusophone Culture - ACLUS, which he founded, Vice-President of the Board of Directors of CLEPUL (today, Center for Lusophone and European Literatures and Cultures). An honorary member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, he belonged to several national and international scientific institutions, integrating and/or presiding over various important commissions (Study Commission for the creation of a university in Madeira, 1983-84; National Commission for the Commemoration of Camões Day and the Portuguese Communities, 1986; 1990 – 1992 – Lisbon, Scientific Council of the Expolíngua of Portugal, 1990 onwards; Installation Commission of the Faculty of Human Sciences of the Catholic University and was founder of the Departments of Communication Sciences and Applied Foreign Languages, 1991-93; External Evaluation Commission of Portuguese Universities, 1997). He was a visiting professor and lecturer at several foreign universities – Rio de Janeiro, Salvador da Bahia, Brasília, Rennes, Utrecht, Cologne, Beijing and Seoul. He directed the research group "Literature and Culture" of CLEPUL, focusing on Brazilian themes and travel literature.
Among his distinctions, the following stand out: in 1987, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of East Asia, Macau, and, in 2007, the Order of Grand Officer of Public Instruction, granted by the President of the Republic, Jorge Sampaio.
