Ésquilo (c. 525 a.C. — 456 a.C.) é o poeta trágico grego mais antigo de que chegaram aos nossos dias algumas obras. Nasceu de família nobre perto de Atenas, em Elêusis. Participou na Batalha de Maratona contra os persas, em 490 a.C., e, muito provavelmente, na de Salamina, em 480 a.C. O poeta acompanhou na idade adulta o crescimento da democracia ateniense. Ésquilo escreveu cerca de 80 a 90 peças, mas destas só nos chegaram sete: Persas (472 a.C.), Sete contra Tebas (467 a.C.), a trilogia Oresteia, composta pelas tragédias Agamémnon, Coéforas e Euménides (458 a.C.), Euménides (de data discutida) e Prometeu Agrilhoado, de data incerta e autoria posta em causa por alguns helenistas.
