Erskine Preston Caldwell nasceu no estado da Geórgia, no sudeste dos Estados Unidos da América a 17 de dezembro de 1903. Foi um aclamado romancista do século XX, começando a publicar no mesmo ano em que colapsa a economia americana em 1929. Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, Caldwell obteve permissão da USSR para trabalhar na Ucrânia como repórter de guerra. Quando voltou, dedicou-se a viajar. Morreu em 1987.
A sua obra toca nas feridas da sociedade americana: a pobreza, o racismo, a exploração das mulheres e violência doméstica, o que lhe valeu também inúmeras críticas. A Estrada do Tabaco foi o seu romance mais notável, considerado um dos grandes clássicos de todos os tempos da literatura dos Estados Unidos da América. Tem um museu em sua homenagem na Geórgia.
