Emilio Salgari nasceu em Verona a 21 de agosto de 1862, numa família modesta de pequenos comerciantes de tecidos. Cedo revelou uma vocação literária, sonhando escrever a partir das suas próprias experiências.
É autor de uma vasta obra, com mais de 80 romances publicados. É o considerado o pai da literatura de massas.
