Elizabeth Hoyt nasceu em Nova Orleães, onde a família da mãe vive há várias gerações, mas foi criada nos invernos gélidos de St. Paul, Minnesota. Quando era pequena, a família viajou muito na Grã-Bretanha, passando um verão em St. Andrews, na Escócia, e um ano em Oxford. Tem uma licenciatura em Antropologia pela Universidade de Wisconsin, Madison. Wisconsin foi também o local onde conheceu o marido, arqueólogo - numa escavação num campo de milho - e vivem no centro do Illinois, com os seus dois filhos, três cães e um jardim que ela cuida com entusiasmo. A família Hoyt gosta de fazer férias que acabem invariavelmente em sítios arqueológicos.
