Manuel Mendes Silva was born in Porto in 1948 and lives in Lisbon. A urologist, he is the head of a hospital urology department, a member of the European College of Urology, and an Honorary Foreign Academician of the National Academy of Medicine of Brazil. Among other positions, he has served as President of the Portuguese Association of Urology, the Lusophone Association of Urology, and the College of Urology of the Order of Physicians. He is also president of the Ethics Council of the Order of Physicians and the Ethics Committee of the Portuguese Association of Urology, as well as the History of Medicine section of the Lisbon Geographical Society. Married since 1971, he is the father of three children.
