Dr. Denis Mukwege nasceu no Congo Belga em 1955.
Durante a sua infância e juventude, foi testemunha do preconceito racial e da decadência económica e social da República Democrática do Congo sob a ditadura de Mobutu.
Hoje, Denis Mukwege é um cirurgião ginecológico de renome, cujo método holístico para tratar mulheres vítimas de violação inspirou inúmeras iniciativas em todo o mundo.
Em 2014 foi convidado para a Casa Branca por Barack Obama e, na Europa, recebeu o prestigiado Prémio Sakharov de direitos humanos.
Em 2018, foi distinguido com o Prémio Nobel da Paz em conjunto com a ativista de direitos humano yazidi e sobrevivente de violência sexual Nadia Murad.
