Donald Ray Pollock nasceu em 1954, em Knockemstiff, Ohio. Trinta e dois anos da sua vida profissional, passou-os como operário de uma fábrica de papel, tendo voltado aos estudos na universidade estadual do Ohio. Estreou-se na escrita com o livro de contos Knockemstiff, que foi galardoado com o Prémio PEN/Robert W. Bingham. O seu romance Sempre o Diabo foi considerado um dos 10 melhores livros de 2011 pela Publishers Weekly e foi premiado em França com o Grande Prémio da Literatura Policial e com o Prémio Mistério da Crítica.
