Dita Zipfel sempre se sentiu entediada na escola, pelo que preferiu educar-se no cinema do seu avô. Vendeu pipocas e batatas fritas no cinema, sapatos em Berlim, legumes em Hamburgo e chegou a ordenhar vacas. Mais tarde, tornou-se professora em North Friesland e atualmente escreve livros e peças de teatro. Trabalha com o marido na editora fundada por ambos.
