Dietrich Bauer possuiu um doutoramento em Economia e Finanças Públicas. Foi professor assistente na Universidade de Heidelberg, na Alemanha. É presidente do conselho de administração do Hospital Diaconal de Estugarda e membro da direção da Sociedade Bíblica Alemã.

Durante trinta anos desempenhou funções de diretor financeiro em várias instituições bancárias e em entidades sem fins lucrativos. É um especialista na análise das crises financeiras internacionais, desde a crise do petróleo que estrangulou a economia na década de setenta do século passado, até à atual crise de crédito.

Dietrich Bauer é casado e tem três filhos.
