Dias de Melo
Dias de Melo was born in the parish of Calheta de Nesquim, Pico Island.
Before April 25th, he was persecuted by the PIDE (Portuguese secret police) and had to leave São Miguel Island, where he lived and was a tenured professor, settling in Lisbon.
In the capital, he began collaborating with the Diário de Notícias and Diário de Lisboa newspapers, while continuing to teach.
He returned to the Azores a few years later, where he currently resides.
He has been honored several times, both in Portugal and abroad, having been decorated with the Order of the Infante by President Mário Soares.
His novel "Pedras Negras" has already been translated into English and Japanese.
