Demis Roussos

Demis Roussos, born Artemios Ventouris Roussos on June 15, 1946, in Alexandria, Egypt, and died on January 25, 2015, in Athens, Greece, was an internationally renowned Greek singer, known for his powerful and emotive voice and a musical style that spanned genres such as pop, folk and traditional Greek music. Over a career spanning five decades, he has become one of the most beloved and recognized artists in European music.

Roussos' passion for music began in his childhood, influenced by the rich Greek musical tradition and the cultural diversity of Egypt. After moving to Greece with his family during the Suez crisis, he joined local bands before forming the iconic progressive rock group Aphrodite's Child in 1967 alongside Vangelis Papathanassiou. The band became a staple of European psychedelic and progressive rock, making a name for themselves with albums such as 666 (1972), which included the hit "Rain and Tears," and elevating Roussos to stardom.

Demis Roussos' solo career began in 1971 and was marked by global hits such as "Forever and Ever," "My Friend the Wind," "Goodbye My Love, Goodbye," and "Lovely Lady of Arcadia," which won audiences around the world, especially in Europe and Latin America. His unique voice, combined with melodic and often dramatic arrangements, made him one of the most popular artists of the 70s and 80s.

In addition to his pop hits, Roussos maintained a connection to traditional Greek music, integrating elements of that heritage into his songs. His charismatic image, often associated with the tunics he wore, became iconic and part of his global appeal. Roussos also stood out for his presence at festivals and for his collaboration with other big names in European music.

In 1985, Roussos was among the hostages of the hijacking of TWA Flight 847, an episode that, fortunately, ended without serious consequences for the singer. This event strengthened his determination to live intensely and to dedicate himself to music and spirituality.

Demis Roussos left a lasting legacy, with more than 60 million records sold throughout his career. Her unique voice, her memorable songs, and her ability to thrill audiences around the world have secured her a special place in music history. His work continues to be celebrated by fans and artists alike, perpetuating his memory as one of the great ambassadors of Greek music.
