David Wallace-Wells, formado nas universidades de Chicago e Brown, foi editor da revista Paris Review e é atualmente editor e colunista da revista New York e escreve ainda para o jornal britânico The Guardian. É "national fellow" do think tank New America. Em Julho de 2017 publicou um artigo sobre o clima na New York que se tornou viral, atingindo em poucos dias seis milhões de visualizações. Foi o artigo mais lido até então naquela revista e serviu de inspiração para este livro – um bestseller da New York Times.
