Nasceu em Viseu a 11/12/1946.
É Coronel do Exército na situação de reforma.
Ingressou na Academia Militar em 1963. Licenciado em Ciências Militares, ramo de Infantaria.
Entre 1967 e 1972 cumpriu duas comissões de serviço em Angola.
Como oficial superior comandou um batalhão de Forças Especiais e foi 2º Comandante do Regimento de Infantaria de Chaves. Entre 1990 e 1993, prestou serviço no Comando Forças Terrestres Aliadas do Sul da Europa (Verona-Itália).
Entre 1993 e 1995, foi Chefe do Estado Maior do Comando da Região Militar do Norte.
É diplomado dos cursos Infantry Officer Advance Course da Escola de Infantaria dos EUA (Fort Benning), Curso Geral de Estado-Maior e Curso de Estado-Maior do Instituto de Altos Estudos Militares.
