David E. Fishman é docente da cadeira de História no Seminário Teológico Judaico de Nova Iorque. Os seus interesses académicos centram-se nos judeus da Europa de Leste. Iniciou a sua investigação para escrever este livro há 25 anos, quando foi convidado como consultor num projeto para estudo de vários objetos descobertos numa antiga igreja em Vilna, Lituânia.
