David C. Lay graduou-se na Aurora University e concluiu o mestrado e o doutoramento na University of California. Foi professor e pesquisador em Matemática por mais de 40 anos, tendo atuado principalmente na University of Maryland, onde foi líder do movimento pela modernização do ensino de Álgebra Linear. Lecionou também na Holanda e na Alemanha. Recebeu quatro prémios universitários pela excelência de ensino. Faleceu em outubro de 2018, mas o seu legado continua a beneficiar estudantes de Álgebra em todo o mundo.
