É autora do bestseller internacional Longitude, do bestseller finalista do Prémio Pulitzer A Filha de Galileu e de Um Céu Mais Perfeito, todos publicados pela Temas e Debates, além de The Planets, And the Sun Stood Still e The Glass Universe, e coautora de The Illustrated Longitude.
Foi galardoada com o Individual Public Service Award do National Science Board, o Bradford Washburn Award, o Kumpke-Roberts Award da Astronomical Society of the Pacific e com uma Guggenheim Fellowship, entre outras honras.
Ex-repórter científica do New York Times, atualmente é editora da coluna de poesia «Meter» na Scientific American.
