Licenciado em Filologia Germânica e doutorado em Cultura Portuguesa, Daniel Pires foi professor cooperante em São Tomé e Príncipe e em Moçambique, professor do ensino secundário e leitor de português nas Universidades de Glasgow, Macau, Cantão e Goa. Dirige o Centro de Estudos Bocageanos desde a sua fundação, em 1999. É autor de, entre outras, as seguintes obras: Dicionário de Imprensa Literária Portuguesa do Século XX, Dicionário Cronológico da Imprensa Macaense do Século XIX, Bocage. A Imagem e o Verbo, bem como de ensaios sobre Camilo Pessanha, Wenceslau de Moraes, o Padre Malagrida, o Marquês de Pombal e Raul Proença. Colaborou no Dicionário de Fernando Pessoa, Dicionário da República, Dictionary of Literature of the Iberian Peninsula, Cambridge Guide to World Theatre, Dicionário Cronológico de Autores Portugueses, Dicionário de História de Portugal e Dicionário de História de Portugal: O 25 de Abril.
