Daniel Keyes nasceu em Brooklyn, em Nova Iorque, e alcançou fama com o seu conto Flores para Algernon, com o qual venceu o Prémio Hugo. O conto foi inicialmente publicado na edição de abril de 1959 da The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, e em 1966 Keyes desenvolveu-o em romance, tendo vencido o Prémio Nebula. O livro foi desde então adaptado várias vezes para a televisão, o teatro e a rádio. Em 2000, Keyes recebeu o título honorário de Autor Emérito da organização Autores Americanos de Ficção Científica e Fantasia. Morreu a 15 de junho de 2014, em Boca Raton, na Florida.
